AFGHAN NETWORK FOR ADVOCACY AND RESOURCES (ANAR)

About Us

Afghan community organizers and lawyers, together with immigration lawyers from Centro Legal de la Raza and Pangea Legal Services, founded Project ANAR in August 2021 to coordinate efforts to unite Afghans in Afghanistan with their loved ones in the United States. Project ANAR (the Afghan Network for Advocacy and Resources) started when Afghan organizers were researching ways in which they could assist their own families in trying to reach the U.S., and realizing that most efforts related to Afghans are focused on U.S.-allied or U.S.-affiliated individuals. Project ANAR has trained and supported hundreds of volunteer attorneys, who have collectively filed more than 1,000 applications for vulnerable Afghans. We have also coordinated national advocacy efforts to demand a pathway for Afghans who sought Humanitarian Parole. Project ANAR works in coalition with community organizations, legal services and resettlement organizations, law schools and others, both on a national level and locally in communities in the DMV region and in the Bay Area, California, to assist with the ongoing immigration legal needs of arriving Afghan community members.

ANAR’s coalition members are:

  • Laila Ayub, Attorney and Project ANAR coordinator

  • Juliette Chisam-Majid, Project ANAR coordinator

  • Saamia Haqiq, Project ANAR coordinator

  • Belinda Liu, Attorney and Project ANAR coordinator

  • Wogai Mohmand, Afghan organizer and attorney at Morgan Lewis

  • Roxana Moussavian, Attorney and co-director at Pangea Legal Services
